Trucker's Face Shows Effects of Sun

A photo of a 69-year-old truck driver who spent 28 years on the road shows the dramatic effects the sun can have on aging of the skin.

The photo, recently released by New England Journal of Medicine, shows that the right side of the unnamed man's face is smooth, while the sun-damaged half is crevassed and pruned beyond his years from years of the sun shining on his face as he drove. His condition is called unilateral dermatoheliosis.

Dr. Cynthia Anderson, a radiation oncologist who is studying the patient, said tinted windows protect from the heat, but it's unknown whether it protects from the sun's dangerous rays.

To protect yourself against ultraviolet radiation, the Centers for Disease Control says to seek shade, especially during midday hours; wear protective clothing; wear a hat with a wide brim to shade the face and head; and, use sun screen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays.
