Putting Your Best Pedal Forward: Top 5 Things to Make Your Orientation Run Smoothly

Driver orientation is a big week. The days are long and there is a lot to get done. There are also a number of things to organize before you arrive. To help you prepare for orientation week, we have put together a list of items you will need to remember.

1. Important Documents
Think a driver’s license will do? Not so fast! In addition to a valid driver’s license, your social security card is a must, and if you have a passport/passcard, please bring it as well. Before leaving home for orientation, make a checklist, your recruiter will be able to help. Think you forgot to pack something? Call the company you applied with - this will save the trouble of asking your family to overnight your social security card or passport. Trust us, it happens.

2. Complete Work History
Yes, also known as a resume. But does your current resume span 10 years? If not, add those jobs you might have forgotten about – we’re interested in seeing what you’ve done for the past decade.

3.  Complete Accident and Ticket History
This one is a bit more complicated – so listen up! We’ll need your complete driving incident history going back 10 years. Tell us about anything – a fender scrape, speeding ticket, tire ruts in a lawn – think to yourself: “anything that did damage to anything.” Think hard and be honest. The top reasons drivers get sent home during orientation week is not being truthful when it comes to work history and/or failure to disclose an accident, incident or ticket.

4. Dress like it’s the first day…every day
That’s right. If you want to make a good impression during orientation week, we recommend that you dress the part of a professional every day that you’re here. You don’t need to wear your high school prom attire or what your wore to your last wedding, but a nice pair of slacks and a clean shirt will do. In other words, don’t look like you just rolled out of bed or got attacked by a lawn mower on the way in.

5. Get packing
You need to pack a bag – a big one! In addition to your week of orientation, we recommend that you pack additional clothing and toiletries for a week or two after orientation. Remember, you’re hitting the road after orientation! Often we can plan for drivers to pass by their homes after a few loads, if you let us know that you need to gather more things, but cannot always promise it will be on the first or second run.

So, there you have it. We’ve practically told you how to ace the test. Just follow these steps and the rest is smooth sailing.
