Eating on the Road

It may not be easy or convenient to live a healthy lifestyle on the road, but it is possible!

Whether you drive across country or have a daily commute to work, eating while traveling can be a necessity.

With a busy schedule and the convenience of fast food, you may have followed the path of many Americans and slipped into a habit of poor nutrition.

While poor nutrition may not seem to affect your health in the short term, it can have long-term detrimental effects.

In the long run, poor nutrition can increase your risk of heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and some types of cancer.

Food on the road typically consists of fast food meals, convenience store snacks and sugary sodas.

Planning ahead and packing simple, nutritious foods can provide energy for your trip without adding pounds to your waistline.

*Choose the healthiest nonperishable snacks to take along with you. Natural energy bars, whole pieces of fruit that don't smash easily such as apples and pears, and dried fruit with nuts are all ideal choices.

*Make sandwiches for a meal if you are traveling with a cooler. Include fresh vegetables and fruits for a healthy, balanced meal.

*Choose supermarkets or delis instead of fast food restaurants for meals. Many have salad bars and fresh-made wraps and sandwiches you can enjoy in the store or at a nearby rest stop.

*Order a salad or grilled sandwich if you must stop at a fast food restaurant for convenience. Consider splitting a meal to save calories.

*Select water, milk, unsweetened iced tea and 100 percent fruit juices as your beverage during travel. Sodas contain unnecessary sugar or artificial sweeteners.
