Are you asleep?

This is one question that can never be answered with “yes.”

With hours of service regulating your sleep schedule, creating an atmosphere conducive to quality sleep while on the road can be challenging. If you are answering “no” to this question too frequently, we have some driver suggested adjustments that might help you sleep better.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, sleep regulates our moods and is also related to learning and memory, important functions for professional drivers navigating the roads each day. Not only will getting enough sleep help you learn new skills, stay on task or be productive, it may also be a critical factor in your health, weight and energy level.

The saying “drive when you have to, sleep when you can” is still common in the industry, but after speaking with drivers here at Con-way Truckload, they shared some tips that help them get shuteye on the road when asked, “what is the most important thing you do or try to remember to do, in order to achieve a restful night of sleep while being on the road?”

“ Try to avoid parking next to a reefer” – Nathan

“Maintaining my exercise regimen as well as a controlled diet. Both help me maintain a positive daily outlook as well as rest well at night. Better & more restful sleep are little known benefits of daily exercise & good eating habits.” – Toby

“As stupid as this sounds, the Qualcomm "holy trinity"... Sleeper berth, approve logs, form 35. If I don't hit those 3, my OCD keeps me awake.” – Michael

“Check my doors to make sure they are locked about three or four times before I fall asleep.” – Kevin

Many of our drivers revealed a theme for them to achieve a good nights worth of sleep that included: blocking out light and sounds, as much as possible, making sure the cab temperature is at a comfortable level, and even more traditional methods, such as reading a book just before going to bed.
